Endodontics (Root Canal Therapy)
Root canal therapy (also can be called “root canals”) is done when damage to the nerve has been done either through decay, fractures or irreversible trauma.
The treatment will begin with:
1. Getting the infected tooth numb
2. Accessing the nerve of the tooth (typically through the biting surface or top of the tooth).
3. Infected necrotic tissue is removed and then filled with a special rubber based material called gutta percha.
4. Composite material will be placed over the access until final restoration is placed.
Depending on the different variables of each tooth a crown (also known as a ”cap”) will always be recommended. Teeth can become very brittle after root canal treatment and it is important to protect the tooth from fracturing leading to possible tooth loss.
